Course Overview
The Beginner's Gambit is designed for those new to the game or with a basic understanding. We eliminate confusion and build a strong foundation from the ground up. By the end of this 8-week course, you will understand the rules, relative value of the pieces, basic tactical motifs, and essential checkmating patterns. You will no longer be an amateur, but a calculated player with a clear plan.
Weekly Breakdown
Learn the language of chess. We cover board setup, algebraic notation, and how each piece moves, captures, and controls the board. Special attention to castling and en passant.
Discover the art of the checkmate. We practice essential patterns like King & Queen vs. King, and King & Rook vs. King to ensure you can convert a winning advantage.
Tactics decide the majority of amateur games. We introduce and drill the core motifs: Forks, Pins, Skewers, and Discovered Attacks. You'll learn to spot them for both sides.
How to start a game with purpose. Learn the three golden rules of the opening: control the center, develop your pieces, and ensure king safety. We'll explore simple, effective opening setups.
Introduction to the final phase of the game. Learn about king activity, pawn promotion, and the concept of "opposition" to win otherwise drawn positions.
A comprehensive review and practical application. Play guided games against fellow students and your coach, receiving live feedback to solidify your newfound knowledge.
